I’m sure that a lot of people are familiar with the concept of diagnostics when it comes to cars. We all been in the situation where the light on the dash comes on when the computers in the car detect a malfunction. If the malfunction is in the engine, then it means that you cannot take your car in to get the smog check done. OBDII regulations are in place to reduce the emissions produced by vehicles. These regulations dictate various aspects that manufactures need to adhere to, and one of the main ones is the connector style.
Any OBDII compliant car has a 16-pin diagnostic port with specific pins that are designated to diagnostics. The standardization of the diagnostic port, made it easier for smog stations and technicians since they do not need to buy additional connectors for the different makes. Which was an issue in OBDI standards, where manufactures used any type of connector.
Motorcycles manufactures have been incorporating more electronics on bikes. And it has become necessary to have a diagnostic port to troubleshoot malfunctions on the bike. Over the years different makes have incorporated a diagnostic port but every one of them is different. It seems that with the new Euro 5 emissions, the diagnostic port will become standardized across makes, just like the OBDII port. The connector is a red 4-pin female and it is found on a lot of new models stating in 2021. Some manufactures like BMW have decided to adapt the OBDII 16-pin port.
As of now, there isn’t any kind on smog inspection on bikes. Could this be the beginning of OBDII like inspections on bikes? Hopefully not!
