One of the popular modifications when doing engine swaps is to delete the EWS functionality from the DME. What is EWS? the EWS is the anti-theft system that is equipped on BMWs from factory. The EWS module receives a signal from the key, if it is a valid signal, then it send the signal to the DME to start the car. The problem is that when your DME fails or you are doing and engine swap, you need to have access to the proper software to write the code from one module to another.
The simpler version is to disable the EWS functionality in the DME. In order to disable the functionality, the software needs to be modified so that the DME does not look for the signal from the EWS module. Keep in mind that all the hardware needs to remain installed on the vehicle. If the EWS module is removed, then the car wont start. If you want to removed the EWS module, then you’ll need to place a jumper cable across two terminals in order for the car to start.
